After many years of teaching in an elementary classroom, I was still worried when I pulled my first groups for reading support as the so called “reading specialist”. I was worried for the kids. Would they hate to miss out in class? Would they feel insecure about reading help or needing extra support? I decided I needed to establish a sense of community with team names. Kids always think of the most ridiculous titles when you give them choice in this way, and it can lighten the mood! I presented the plan to one of my first groups and they didn’t miss a beat…”We are the Powerful Reading Warriors” they said. “Of course you are,” I said. Thinking how naive I still am.
